On-Site Training

Our staffing plan and training structure was originally designed with the intentions of managing most all of our safety training in-house. Initially we used Safety Compliance Services, Inc to fill the requirements until the new staff could get better prepared to manage the training objectives. However, SCS performed at an exceptionally high standard, at a cost that was competitive when compared to our expected in-house expense and has always demonstrated the necessary flexibility to provide quality training around our challenging shift schedules. Why On-Site Training from Professionals?

While other forms of training, including computer based training (CBT) and in-house training with videos or safety briefs can play a role in a company’s overall Training Plan, the disadvantages of these training formats typically preclude their exclusive use in providing for all of your training needs.

Disadvantages of Video or Computer Based Training

• Several OSHA regulations require an instructor with subject matter expertise capable of fielding real-time questions and answers for the specific topic area.
• OSHA has taken a firm position that while video and/or CBT can be part of a company Training Program, use of computer-based or video training by itself would not be sufficient to meet the intent of most of OSHA’s training requirements
• Video and CBT do not foster discussion among trainees and the training leader/instructor to ensure understanding of safety rules and requirement and how they apply to the trainee’s specific work environment and/or work tasks
• Video and CBT do not allow for site-specific policies, procedures, and concerns relative to the subject matter to be incorporated into the training
• Video and CBT is generally viewed by trainees as boring and monotonous making it difficult to fully engage the trainee in the learning experience
• Video and CBT do not allow for training in didactic or hands-on skills such as proper donning, doffing and fitting of respirators, rigging of fall protection equipment, inspection of PPE, and ventilating a confined space to name a few skills that should include hands-on training
• Video and CBT do not provide trainees with an opportunity to exercise and practice the concepts learned

Disadvantages of In-House Training

• Trainers may not be aware of what training is required, what the training must cover, what documentation and competency demonstrations are required, and at what intervals the training must be provided at.
• Trainers may lack knowledge sufficiently above the trainees’ knowledge level to foster learning
• Training that is adequate, outdated, or wrong may not be recognized. Despite the best intentions, training to do things the wrong way or providing misinformation, or inadequate information, perpetuates itself year after year until what was thought to be a well trained workforce is woefully uninformed and unaware of current regulations, requirements, and recognized best practices.
• Trainers may lack adult education skills and knowledge of teaching techniques such that the training retention is minimal
• Trainers may have difficulty speaking in front of groups and/or their peers
• Trainers may lack time to adequately prepare training to maximize the effective use of trainee time and to ensure proper documentation and record keeping of the training.

On-site training conducted by experienced safety training professionals ensures the maximum effectiveness of the training message, maximum retention of the knowledge and skills taught, and ensures the training is accurate and thorough. While other training formats may serve a role in a quality training program, the benefits of having skilled, experienced instructors providing training tailored specifically to your company cannot be surpassed. When you contract with us, not only will we assist you in establishing a training plan that ensures your meeting OSHA required training intervals with a mix of training formats that best suits your needs and budget, but we will also contact you before we provide any training to discuss your specific operation, training history, and work practices as well as request copies of pertinent safety programs so we can incorporate this information into the training curriculum. Our training truly is specific to each client’s needs ensuring both applicability to the attending employees and compliance with Regulatory requirements. All of our instructors have a history as experienced fire service instructors, are trained and experienced in adult education, and have the requisite knowledge and experience to meet OSHA instructor requirements where applicable. Our experienced staff of trainers can all provide training in multiple subject areas allowing you to contract with a single service provider for all your safety and emergency response training needs as well as permitting multiple topics to be covered in each session saving costs and easing employee schedule burdens.

In addition to Health and Safety Training, we are also experts in providing training in confined space and technical rescue as well as emergency preparedness and response. This type of training takes a different background and skill set than training in safety and health topics. As Fire Service instructors with years of experience as professional firefighters, our trainers have the experience of both “doing” and “teaching” all skill sets in the areas of industrial rescue and emergency response. From Emergency Management; to Hazardous Materials Response; to Firefighting; to Emergency Medical; to Technical and Confined Space Rescue, we can provide unparalleled curriculum and instruction in preparing your personnel to handle your potential emergencies. We have years of experience providing industry with training in responding to site emergencies. We offer training in both the management of, and tactical response to, emergencies specific to each client; including fire, chemical spill, technical rescue, terrorist events, and medical emergencies. Whether you desire basic first response training or training for an in-house Emergency Response Team with full rescue, hazardous materials, fire, and medical capabilities, we have the expertise necessary to serve your needs in this unique area of training, including Incident Command training with NIMS (National Incident Management System) certification if desired.

Training Documentation

Often overlooked, but very important for regulatory compliance is the documentation of training. Many training programs only provide individual trainees with certificates of completion. When we provide your training, you will receive the following documentation for each training topic to maintain in your files should a regulatory auditor request training records;

• Original signed attendance sheets
• Certification letter stating the training that was conducted, the dates, the instructor, the trainees, and the OSHA regulation the training complied with
• An outline of the training
• Copies of the completed competency exams and/or competency evaluations

Instructor qualifications upon request.

For those clients for whom we provide training in multiple subject areas, we also provide a detailed training matrix that lists all trainees and training topics and the dates each trainee completed the training. Additionally, we maintain our own electronic documents of all the training we provide so, should a client be unable to locate past training records when needed, we can forward duplicate record copies upon request.
